Please go to the library's web site for information about how you can help send a message to Ohio lawmakers about what Ohioans really value. Taft's cuts will result in funding cuts for local police and fire, as well as cuts for the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. As a result, the "Right" has poured millions of dollars into groups like the College Republicans, trying to buy the hearts and minds of young people. Now, they are taking things too far here in Ohio with the so-called Academic Bill of Rights. In the form of Ohio Senate Bill 24, the confusingly named Academic Bill of Rights would prohibit university professors from engaging students in any type of controversial conversation. The bill is vague for a very good reason. The word controversial is intended to keep professors on their feet. Biology teachers won't want to touch evolution for fear of being labeled. The same applies to historians teaching about the history of Islam, or theologians trying to define the word martyr. The bill's sponsor Larry Mumford introduced it with some harsh words, and ridiculous, fabricated statistics that do not warrent being repeated here. Suffice it to say, this guy is stuck in the 1950s, and would be a nice friend of Joe McCarthy.

Read more about this truly stupid bill and what you can do at the ACLU of Ohio's website.

Franken for the Senate!

The AP is reporting that Minnesota Senator Mark Dayton (D) will not run for reelection in 2006. Air America radio personality Al Franken (who can be heard from 12-3 on 1530 WCKY) commented in the past that he would consider a run in 2008 against Norm Coleman (R, Minn) for the late, great Senator Paul Wellstone's seat. Wellstone and Franken were friends, and there may be personal reasons Franken would want to run for Wellstone's old seat, in particular. But wouldn't it make a lot of sense, if this is something he wants to do anyway, for Al to run for the seat of a Democrat who is retiring?

Anyway, I'd love to see him in the Senate, so let me be among the first to say "Run Al, Run!"

Auschwitz

Jerry Springer spoke very eloquently today on his radio show on the subject of the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the German concentration camp where the Nazis exterminated Jews during the Holocaust. Springer made the point that the events that transcribed to lead his parents to leave Germany and also lead to the murders of many of his family members, helped shape his politics and make him a liberal.

Jerry also made the point that the term "Nazi" is thrown about too casually by some people today. He said that no matter what you think of your political opponents, do not call that Nazis, because nobody is even close to being like the Nazis. An important thing to remember today.

Remember to check out Springer on the Radio, weekdays from 9-noon on 1530 AM, WCKY.

Gay Marriage Amendment

Republican supporters of the Federal Marriage Amendment are out there stumping for legislative gay-bashing again. All this despite what the AP calls "mixed signals from the White House." President Bush has said the issue is not all that important to him in a second term and he won't push for it. How the AP can call that a "mixed signal" is beyond me, but I digress.

What is striking about the article is the timetable the Republicans have set up. Senator Wayne Allard (R, Colorado) expresses cautious optimism about the possibility of the ban on gay marriage. "Who's to say whether we have enough votes or not?" is Allard's question. He goes on to predict that the issue will be brought before the Senate before the 2006 mid-term elections.

So there you have it ladies and gentlemen, keep it in a drawer for a year and change, and then hit the Democrats with it just in time to question our values and keep Republicans in power in Congress. Unbelievable.

Welcome

Welcome to the University of Cincinnati College Democrats blog.

Check this site often for information about meetings, events, opinion, and opportunities to help elect Democrats in Cincinnati and Ohio.

We'll be announcing our first meeting of Winter quarter via this site, and on our email list very soon.
